Understanding IELTS scoring is one of the fastest ways to improve your band. Most students focus on getting more answers right, but the scoring system rewards specific patterns that you can target strategically.

How IELTS Band Scores Work

Your overall band score is the average of four individual scores:

  • Listening (out of 40 questions)

  • Reading (out of 40 questions)

  • Writing (examiner-assessed, Bands 1-9)

  • Speaking (examiner-assessed, Bands 1-9)


The average is rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Listening & Reading: Raw Score to Band

The Strategic Insight Most Students Miss

Here's what most prep courses won't tell you: going from Band 6.0 to 6.5 in Reading requires getting just 3-4 more questions right. That's the difference between answering 23 correctly vs 27.
